tally hall is an american rock band formed in ann arbor, michigan in december 2002 and consists of five members (joe hawley, zubin sedghi, rob cantor, ross federman, and andrew horowitz.) mtv once described their sound as a mix between weezer, queen, and the beatles and i think that's fairly accurate BUT with the addition that they remind me of TMBG too.
all members within the band wear their trademark tie colors during each concert (like the ninja turtles!) these colors are...
RED for joe hawley (guitar, vocals.)
BLUE for zubin sedghi (bass, vocals.)
YELLOW for rob cantor (guitar, vocals.)
GRAY for ross federman (drums.)
GREEN for andrew horowitz (keyboard, sometimes vocals.)
throughout their time as a band, tally hall released 2 studio albums, marvin's marvelous mechanical museum in 2005/2006/2008, and good & evil in 2011 as their final release. throughout their career, other projects and web content was also created, such as the tally hall internet show (T.H.I.S.) in 2008. the band has been on indefinite hiatus since the release of good & evil in 2011, but have had many solo projects released during this time as well as 2 performances at ann arbor's own sonic lunch music festival with 3/5 members present.
their albums (especially their debut) are delightfully inconsistent in their sound and vibe, embodying the vibe of a carnival full with all sorts of strange and macabre oddities shoved into one little kooky album!
wall party '06: a.k.a. that one time tally hall showed up to play at a fan's basement
rickshaw stop 03.02.2008: a tally hall concert in shockingly high recording quality (like 90% of their recorded concert footage is in 240p or lower unfortunately. thanks mid 2000s youtube compression very cool)
blind pig 09.23.2006: stage light nearly falls on zubin MID SONG
just a friend at toquet hall 04.09.2009:this is a thing they would do sometimes. they switched all their instruments during their cover of biz markie's just a friend. they played this song at the end of every concert they did for like 3 years straight and every time they'd do it they'd put a little unique spin on it. so... joe plays the drums in this one :-)
just a friend 05.20.2009: the awesome improvisational technical issues remix
la bamba mmc '05: tally hall attempts to sing la bamba but none of them know spanish so it just kind of ends up as somewhat spanish sounding nonsense. except for ross though
blinded by the light 07.09.2008: one of my favorite tally hall covers!!! joe's vocals are absolutely spectacular here. full of frantic energy!!!
freebird (live, 2008): i don't have much to say for this one it's just fire man
joe hawley and his operatic screeches during welcome to tally hall (a compliation): his falsetto is surprisingly good. oh how i wish this made it into the studio recording though.... sigh
